If I would have known how much social media has grew since being a child growing up on the rise of it, I wouldn’t believe it. I think I was in 6th grade with I made an Instagram account, and I was only 10 years old when I made my Facebook account. I was really young minded so I only had few family members and friends on my friends list and just played games and uploaded pictures of myself playing softball so in a way I was a tad too young or maybe even too late for the Facebook hype trend. I remember exactly where I was when I made my Instagram account. My friends and I were obsessed with the app and we would constantly post. As we grew older, the app became very popular and many people would post and know each other from this platform. When we were old enough to go to social gatherings, we would meet people from other schools and keep in touch through Instagram which was cool to see through pictures growing up and as the years go by.
Social Media has had a huge impact on me while growing up and now that I am much older, it is so easily accessible for me to use it knowledgably. It is the quickest and most convenient way to search for something of the unknown. With that being said, the down part is how quickly false news or false media can spread which can cause many issues. In the United States we have a good coverage of the things that everyone should have access and knowledge about. I know there are some countries who are forbidden or blocked to watch certain news channels which gives them a different or specific perspective of an issue.
Social Media most definitely has its perks but the downfalls of it often outweigh the good. For instance, with the recent tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his wife did not get a proper phone call before the media had gotten to do it publicly first. So many heartbroken family members who just found out their loved one has passed through a breaking news article. Such a tragic event and the piece of information she should have received gracefully was worsen for her. Social Media is just as useful or powerful as the person behind the screen or keyboard.
