Media is everywhere and forever will be everywhere. “The internet is forever” is one of the first things I was told when I was younger and starting to get to the age to make social media accounts. To never post anything you would say in person, and never post anything you do not want remembered by. Although there are some exceptions, mostly everything you see on the internet either the person gave some sort of consent or posted it themselves. When I see something eye brow raising on social media, I just think things to myself as to why someone would post that for everyone to see. A lot of this responsibility is on the person to be ethical and make smart choices about their media use. So in order to protect our privacy, we could not post things we do not want to talk about or let others know. Sometimes even posting things in irrational times can come back and bite you in the end. Another way of protecting is to making your account on private and not public for anyone to stumble upon and see. This helps with spam and accounts that are not following you but also on your page. Another means of protecting our privacy online is to use numbers and nicknames for usernames. It is not the best idea to use your first and last name on every single platform you have. For me, I like to use my middle name on accounts that I will eventually delete and to lesson the traffic I get of other accounts whom may want to follow me. An avatar also has a huge effect, our picture is the first thing someone sees when going on a profile, using something other than selfie can be beneficial for the user depending on their situation. This next advice is to not have your location on apps. This is the best way to put yourself in some serious danger. I cannot count how many of my friends still have their location on this application called “Snapchat”. It allows other to see exactly what street in what town you are in without even notifying you. These are little things I advice and do to stay on the safe side of the world wide web.
